Which way does the canal go?

Several routes for the Rochdale Canal were considered. One of these would have taken the canal from Sowerby Bridge to Manchester via Bury; another climbed up the Ryburn Valley beyond Ripponden from where a tunnel was to carry it beneath the Pennines to emerge near Littleborough. Eventually the current route was settled on, enabling the canal to cross the Pennines without any major tunnels.
