Trade on the Rochdale

There was a wide variety of cargoes carried on the canal from raw materials for use in industry such as wool, cotton, timber and salt to finished products for distribution and export.

The amount of goods traded along the canal increased until the opening of the Manchester and Leeds Railway. Competition between the canal and railway to transport goods led to a price war with the railway company until agreement was reached on the charges to carry the goods on the two methods of transport.
